What I do When I Get a Headache
I’ve been practicing acupuncture in the Brookline and Boston area for almost 10 years and treat migraine and headache very regularly. I love seeing my patients’ quality of life improve when the headaches and migraines decrease in severity and frequency.
I had my very first acupuncture session in 2003 due to debilitating migraines as a college student. I saw first hand how successful acupuncture could be at treating this condition. I went from almost daily pain and symptoms, to none at all…. I rarely got headaches for years… until 2014 when I suffered a bad concussion. With a lot of treatment (acupuncture, chiropractic and meditation), I recovered and only get headaches and migraines occasionally now when I am overworked, lacking sleep, or had an extra alcoholic beverage I could have done without.
So what do I do now when I get headaches or a migraine? . . . I taught my boyfriend the basics of how to do cupping therapy on my neck and back, and I use presstack on myself (acupuncture “stickers” with little tiny needles attached) on the relevant points (depending on where the pain is). This is my version of a home treatment that I use regularly as soon as I feel symptoms coming on, or even if I’m just over-tired and want to prevent a headache from coming on. And of course, try to drink more water and rest more.
This was my cupping session (courtesy of my boyfriend) last weekend when I had a 3 day migraine due to a virus/flu.
