Balance Method/ Dr. Richard The-Fu Tan’s style:
This is the style of Acupuncture that Nicole predominantly uses in her practice.
Balance method acupuncture uses “distal” points (points found away from the symptomatic location) on the arms and legs to treat the affected area. For example, if a person comes in with low back pain, needles are often put in the ankles and arms, and not the back itself.
This is advantageous for a number of reasons.
First, it allows the practitioner to observe the effectiveness of the treatment right away, by having the person move the affected area once the needles are in.
Secondly, this style of acupuncture is unique in its ability to yield quick and often immediate relief from pain. Patients often feel immediate relief from their pain and improved range of motion.
Additionally, this approach to treatment usually involves acupuncture points that are accessible without having to remove clothing (ankles, wrists, legs, arms, etc).
This particular form of acupuncture is very effective for pain conditions. Also, due to its balancing nature, this acupuncture approach offers a systematic and extremely effective way to treat internal disorders and psycho-emotional conditions. This form of Acupuncture is also used to support anxiety, insomnia, menstrual/hormonal imbalances, and allergies. With this approach, one can treat many symptoms in the same treatment. Although immediate relief is often felt by patients, (or at least 50% relief) for long-lasting relief to occur, multiple treatments are necessary (see FAQ for more info on treatment frequency).
Japanese Acupuncture:
In general, this approach of acupuncture relies heavily on palpation for diagnosis and treatment. The needles are typically thinner than Chinese acupuncture, and it uses minimal amount of stimulation to achieve the most effective results. Nicole tends to use this style of acupuncture with patients who are very sensitive to needles, with children, and with pregnant women.
