Acne: Breaking Out After the Pill?
I see this ALL THE TIME in my practice. Women who may not have had acne prior to the birth control pill, or perhaps had acne or mild acne prior to the pill seeing their skin ERUPT after discontinuing the pill. The first instinct is to get back ON the pill to clear the skin. However, as Lara Briden, ND says, it is “delaying the inevitable”. The pill suppresses many hormonal imbalances in the body, and many women only discover these when they come off the hormones.
However, this can be a blessing in disguise, as it helps to point out deeper imbalances that need to be addressed in order to have healthier hormones, healthier cycles, and improved fertility. The good news is that there are natural approaches for healing acne at a deep, internal level so that it is kept at bay for good. If you are considering coming off the pill, you can begin these protocols prior to discontinuing the hormones. #birthcontrolacne #acnehelp #comingoffthepill
Side note: In some cases, the pill itself can make acne worse in certain individuals, especially pills that use a higher androgen type of progestin. Women with PCOS in particular should steer clear of those types of birth control pills as it can aggravate their symptoms while on the pill, but also even after discontinuing the pill due to its effects on insulin.
